a herd of bisons from the Augustów Primeval Forest

 Now in the age of cells, it’s easy to get messages. I have just received a text message from a bison herd near the village of Skieblewo. We went there, a herd of European bison was grazing in a meadow at the edge of the forest. This is the whole herd inhabiting the Augustów forests. The first bison were brought here only two years ago. Already here the herd has increased. New bison were born. Only now were we able to observe them ourselves. Too bad it was almost dusk. Good photos are hard to come by in such conditions. But it was worth it.

In summer, bison hide in the forests and can be found by chance. It is completely different in winter. They gather in large flocks, even up to 100 searches, they look out onto meadows and fields. It often happens that the flock stays in one place for a few or even several days. There is then an opportunity to get close to a reasonable distance and take photos. Good pictures can be taken during favorable weather.

So far I have not had the opportunity to watch bison in the wild. Coming to Hajnówka just before Nowosady village, which lies on the edge of Bialowieza Forest, we saw in the distance a huge herd of bison. I think that there were about 60-80. They were at a considerable distance of about 500-700 meters. The weather was very cloudy, foggy, and even lightly snowing. I decided to do some photos.
   The next day, I returned by the same route and in the same place, the herd was still. There were fewer of them, and probably part of their departed. Also I am photographed from the same place. The weather was similar to the previous day. I have not had time to wander closer to the snow-covered field. I saw a few photographers who came to shoot bison and approached the herd at a distance of about 100 m. The Bison almost did not react to people, slowly moving.
